This NASA astronaut just became the oldest Eagle Scout to go to space

“NASA’s oldest active astronaut is now the oldest Eagle Scout astronaut to go on a NASA mission into space.

Don Pettit, a 69-year-old Eagle Scout from Silverton, Oregon, is serving as a flight engineer and member of Expedition 72 on the International Space Station. It is Pettit’s fourth journey into space and will add to the 370 days he had already accumulated in orbit.

“I would go back to space in a nanosecond,” Pettit said when asked about his plans for future space travel during a recent livestream Q&A on Space.com. “It’s what I do for a living. Give me another couple of days (when I get back from this mission) to get my feet on the ground, and I’m ready to go again.”

Expedition 72 is Pettit’s first trip to space in 12 years. His previous missions occurred in 2012, 2008 and 2003.

You can watch last week’s launch in the video below. Scroll to the 10:15 mark to see an interview with Pettit. The actual launch occurs around the 1-hour, 9-minute mark.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c59N7aHLZx8&t=1s

A photographer …

On top of being an astronaut, Pettit is an all-around interesting guy.

During his 2003 mission, he gathered spare parts from around the space station and built his own barn-door tracker, a camera mount commonly used by astronomers and photographers to capture images of stars and planets in the night sky.

Only this time, Pettit turned his camera toward Earth. The device allowed him to take some remarkable high-resolution images of nighttime city lights from the ISS.

He used those photos to create the video below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78BecvPoo3Q

… and an inventor

During his 2008 mission, Pettit invented a new kind of zero-gravity coffee cup. Tired of having to drink his morning coffee from a pouch through a straw, Pettit found inspiration in a random piece of plastic ripped from a flight mission book.

By folding the piece of plastic in just the right shape, he found that surface tension inside the “cup” could serve a similar role to gravity, holding the coffee in place so he could sip it as he would on the ground.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pk7LcugO3zg

Pettit also achieved fame in the, shall we say, “nerdier” circles of the internet when he was forced to repair his complicated wristwatch in zero gravity, inadvertently changing the way NASA would handle future repairs on the space station.”

Cub Haunted 2024

Cub Haunted at Camp Ho Non Wah: A Spooktacular Success!

Greetings from the shores of the Bohicket, where little ghosts, goblins, and plenty of brave scouts come to play! The annual Cub Haunted event, hosted by the Order of the Arrow, once again brought the perfect mix of thrills, chills, and family fun to Camp Ho Non Wah. This much-anticipated event continues to be a highlight of the Cub Scout calendar, drawing in scouts, leaders, and families for a night they won’t soon forget.

Cub Haunted is more than just a simple haunted house experience-it’s a full evening packed with adventure, laughter, and memories that will last a lifetime. Scouts and their families were treated to a variety of Halloween-themed activities that catered to all levels of bravery, making it the perfect outing for even the youngest Cub Scouts.

The Frightful Festivities

The evening kicked off with scouts donning their best Halloween costumes. From superheroes to spooky skeletons and everything in between, the creativity on display was fantastic! The festivities began with a thrilling haunted house experience, carefully crafted by the Order of the Arrow. Each room was filled with surprises, ghostly scenes, and just the right amount of fright to keep the scouts on their toes.

The haunted trail, set deep in the woods of Camp Ho Non Wah, was another favorite. As scouts ventured through the winding paths, they encountered all sorts of eerie sights and sounds, making for an unforgettable adventure. For those seeking a more laid-back experience, the hayride offered a fun and scenic way to take in the spooky camp atmosphere, with plenty of pumpkins and friendly “ghosts” waving along the way.

Adventure Activities and More!

In addition to the haunted attractions, Cub Haunted featured plenty of fun activities to keep the scouts entertained. The slingshot station was a big hit, giving the young adventurers a chance to test their aim and hit spooky targets. Scouts also enjoyed various games and challenges that kept their spirits high throughout the evening.

As the excitement wound down, families gathered together for a cozy outdoor movie under the stars. With ice cream and cookies in hand and blankets to snuggle under, it was the perfect way to end a fun-filled night. Laughter and chatter filled the air as scouts reflected on their favorite moments from the evening.

A Community Event to Remember

Cub Haunted 2024 was a massive success, thanks to the incredible effort and dedication of the Order of the Arrow, the troop leaders, and the many volunteers who helped bring the

event to life. The creativity, enthusiasm, and teamwork were evident at every turn, from the elaborate haunted house decorations to the carefully planned activities. The event not only provided endless entertainment but also strengthened the sense of community and camaraderie among scouts and their families.

With countless great costumes, plenty of spine-tingling scares, and endless smiles, Cub Haunted delivered an evening full of joy and excitement. It’s events like these that make scouting truly special, bringing families together to create cherished memories and celebrate the spirit of adventure.

We can’t wait to see what Cub Haunted 2025 will bring! Until then, thank you to everyone who made this event possible, and here’s to another year of scouting fun and Halloween magic at Camp Ho Non Wah!

National Youth Leadership Training 2025

It is my pleasure to formally invite your Scouts, Crew and Ship members to the 2025 Coastal Carolina National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) course.  For those who may not be familiar with NYLT, or its predecessor, Junior Leader Training (JLT) in BSA, the course is a nationally recognized leadership development course put on by Councils across the country.  Beginning in 2005, NYLT is “designed to teach leadership skills that can be used in Scouting and throughout life, such as conflict resolution, communication, situational leadership, and project planning.”  Following a national syllabus and instructed by previous NYLT youth graduates, the course spans six days (two weekends 28 February to 2 March and 14 to 16 March 2025) at Camp Ho Non Wah. This year’s theme is “The Science of Leadership”.  The youth team is designing a fun interactive learning experience with a flair for providing the reasons for Troop, Crew and Ship program success.  Led by three Eagle Scouts and Venture Crew/Ship members, the team includes multiple National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience (NAYLE) graduates, Arrowman, multiple second and third term instructors and a motivated group of recent graduates from last year’s program.  Overseen by an adult staff with over 100 years of experience as Scoutmasters, Advisors and Committee Chairs, the program continues to provide a safe and open location for discussion, learning, fun and comradery for all participants. To participate in the program, a Scout / Crew-Ship member must:
  • Be registered in a Scouting Unit
  • Be 13 years old by time of attending
  • Have earned the rank of 1st Class (no rank requirement for Crews / Ships)
  • Have a current BSA Health and Medical form Parts A, B and C (for the duration of the event)
  • Have completed Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST) or ILSC/S for Crews or Ships
  • Have a unit leader recommendation
  • Register here: mycampmanager.com/hnw/events/UJ2Z41
The program is run under the Patrol method and Troop organization.  Each participant will become a member of a patrol and learn the duties and responsibilities of the leadership positions.  The course is taught based on the BSA “ideal patrol”, which will include an expansion into the Patrol Leaders Conferences, planning of events and setting each participant up for success as a leader in your organization. The first weekend is focused on troop and patrol meeting, leadership philosophies, and communications methods; taught with games, activities, and lectures. The second weekend expands on these themes and includes an Outpost event where the participants camp in their sites working as patrols.  We invite adult leaders to visit the event on the second weekend to see the results of the program, and potentially become part of a future staff. I hope to see many of your Scouts or Crew members this winter for a safe, fun and educational experience. Yours In Scouting, Sean Szymanski Course Director CCC 2025 NYLT Registration is open on MyCampManager: https://www.mycampmanager.com/hnw/manage_event.php?event_id=207

Back 2 Pack Event: A Night of Fun, Games, and New Beginnings

“Yesterday’s Back 2 Pack event was an unforgettable evening of fun and camaraderie at our churchyard, buzzing with excitement from both new and returning scout families. The turnout was truly amazing, with about five new families joining us to explore what Scouting has to offer. The evening kicked off with our ceremonial opening, where everyone gathered to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, Scout Oath, and Scout Law. Following the opening, the kids split into round-robin groups to enjoy a series of activities that brought smiles and laughter all around. They dove into Gaga ball, badminton, sack races, and parachute popcorn, each game more thrilling than the last. A surprise yoga session added an unexpectedly awesome twist to the lineup, bringing a sense of calm and focus amidst the high-energy fun. The grand finale was the highlight of the night-a foam pit where the kids engaged in an epic play session that left everyone grinning from ear to ear. While the kids were having a blast, new parents were given all the information they needed to learn just how awesome Scouting really is. Overall, the Back 2 Pack event was a huge success, setting the stage for an exciting new year of Scouting adventures. We’re thrilled to welcome our new families and look forward to the many memories we’ll create together!”

Troop 20 Eagle Tymer Garris

“For my Eagle Project, I designed and built a visiting garden at Sandpiper Post Acute to provide residents with a space to enjoy fresh air and sunlight. The project was inspired by my great-grandma’s experience there, where the indoor environment felt gloomy. I wanted to create an outdoor area where residents could relax and get much-needed Vitamin D. Although my great-grandma passed away during the project, I dedicated its completion to her memory.
The garden includes seating areas, flower beds, and shaded spots for comfort. It has become a place where residents and their families can visit and enjoy nature, providing a brighter and more uplifting atmosphere for everyone.” -Tymer Garris

Troop 20 Eagles – Henry Black and Matt Fortson

Two More Eagles Soar! 🦅

Exciting news for our scouting community: Two more Eagles from Troop 20 have taken flight, achieving the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. This is no small feat, and it speaks volumes about their dedication, hard work, and the supportive community that helped them reach this goal.

Henry Black is a sophomore at Porter-Gaud School who balances academics with being a standout athlete. As a committed cross-country runner and lacrosse player, Henry has proven he knows how to push his limits both on and off the field. His future plans are ambitious—after graduation, he hopes to attend Auburn University, where he plans to continue pursuing excellence in both athletics and academics. With the determination he’s shown through scouting and sports, Henry is sure to make a significant impact wherever he goes.

Matt Fortson, on the other hand, is a Porter-Gaud senior and a top-ranked swimmer in South Carolina. His discipline and drive have earned him accolades in the pool, but his aspirations go beyond sports. Following in the footsteps of his brother and honoring his family’s longstanding tradition of military service, Matt will join the United States Military Academy at West Point. His commitment to serving the country and upholding family values is an inspiration to all who know him.

A Community Effort

Earning the rank of Eagle Scout is a “Family and Community Affair.” While it’s the scout who puts in the hours and hard work to achieve this rank, they don’t do it alone. Older scouts, parents, siblings, teammates, troop leaders, committee members, merit badge counselors, and council Eagle advisors all play a crucial role in guiding and supporting them through this challenging journey. It’s a true testament to the power of community and teamwork. Hats off to everyone involved in lifting up these young men and helping them reach this monumental milestone!

An Impressive Record

With Henry and Matt’s accomplishments, Troop 20 has now produced 22 Eagle Scouts since 2021. It’s an incredible run that highlights the troop’s strong foundation and commitment to nurturing future leaders. We are incredibly proud of all our Eagles and excited to see what the future holds for them.

Keep soaring, Troop 20!

Pack 707 Scouts Help “Save Our History and Trails” at Park Cleanup!

This past Saturday, Pack 707 was proud to participate in the “Saving Our History and Trails” Cleanup at the Charles Pinckney National Historic Site. Our Arrow of Light Den, along with one mighty Lion Scout, showed up ready to make a difference. Despite being the only group to attend, our Scouts worked hard alongside the park rangers to clear the land, ensuring the trails and historic site remain accessible for future visitors. The rangers were incredibly thankful for the efforts of our small but mighty crew. The three Arrow of Light Scouts and their Lion Scout counterpart demonstrated Pack 707’s commitment to service, working tirelessly to help preserve this important piece of history. The day was filled with teamwork, dedication, and a shared sense of accomplishment. We’re grateful for the participation of our Scouts and their families. Events like these show the heart of Pack 707, stepping up to serve our community and protect its history. Thank you to everyone involved, and we look forward to many more opportunities to help our community thrive!

Friends Of Scouting

There are so many ways you can support Scouting in the Carolina Lowcountry—attend the annual fundraising event, buy popcorn, play in the golf tournament, etc. But the number one way we fund the programs we offer is when you make your pledge to support the Friends of Scouting campaign.

You know the value of this program! Speak to your friends and business acquaintances about the importance of Scouting to the youth of the Carolina Lowcountry and urge them to support our programs with a financial gift, matching gift, or grant and foundation information.

Thank you for all that YOU do for Scouting!

James E West

'Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.'

James E. West was appointed to the position of Chief Scout Executive in 1910 by the founding leadership of Scouting in America. West worked with Sir Robert Baden-Powell, Daniel Carter Beard, Ernest T. Seton, and many community leaders to give direction to the infant program of Boy Scouts of America. On January 2, 1911, West and others formed the National Council, B.S.A. During that year the Scout Oath, Law and fundamental policies were established. Under his leadership over the next three decades, Scouting grew and matured into the program we recognize and enjoy today. Scouting today is the lengthened shadow of more than three decades of the farseeing and dedicated leadership of Dr. James E. West.

You can "extend your shadow" by contributing to the West Fellowship Award. Available for gifts of $1,000 and up to the Council's endowment fund, the gift must be in addition to, and not replace or diminish, the donor’s annual support.

For more information, please contact Michelle Strobel, Development Director, at (843) 425-2351.
