Letter from the Publisher Winter 2025

Dear Scouters, Finding the right words to inspire you is always a delightful challenge—but after attending the 2025 Council Recognition Dinner, inspiration practically wrote itself. At the dinner, I had the pleasure of meeting our new Assistant Scout Executive, Wyndell Waldon. As we got acquainted, I discovered a wealth of experience and passion in his impressive Scouting career. I’m thrilled to welcome him to our council. His proactive outreach to public schools—engaging teachers, principals, and superintendents—ensures that they are informed about the incredible opportunities Scouting offers. His efforts underscore the vital role our programs play in shaping the moral character and future of our youth. A sincere thank you to Wyndell for his dedication; thanks to his hard work, our numbers have steadily grown over the past three years, and I am confident that his initiatives will further expand our youth membership. I must also recognize the outstanding Reverend Robert Sturdy from the Citadel, our featured speaker for the evening. His memorable message, which he termed “reversing the question,” struck a powerful chord with me. Instead of asking, “What will happen to me if I help someone?” he challenged us to ask, “What will happen to that person if I don’t help them?” His words remind us of the importance of lending a hand, especially when someone is in distress or facing danger. So, the next time you face a challenge in your communication or decision-making, take a moment to seek inspiration in the world around you. Scouting offers both youth and adults the opportunity to live by the Scout Law, especially the principle “To Help Other People At All Times.” Yours in Scouting, Dr. Bobby C. Baker VP Marketing

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, along with the BCSO Law Enforcement Explorer Post 700 personnel, recently participated and competed in the 2025 Winter SCALE (South Carolina Association of Law Enforcement Explorers) Conference. The conference was hosted by the City of Charleston Police Department.

“The explorer program is really an excellent way for youth to learn about law enforcement. This program lets us cultivate and develop future law enforcement professionals as well as it enables our deputies to interact and build bonds with the youth in our community. Several of our deputies were explorers in their youth – it really is a great program that we are proud of.” Sheriff Duane Lewis stated.

James E West

'Society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.'

James E. West was appointed to the position of Chief Scout Executive in 1910 by the founding leadership of Scouting in America. West worked with Sir Robert Baden-Powell, Daniel Carter Beard, Ernest T. Seton, and many community leaders to give direction to the infant program of Boy Scouts of America. On January 2, 1911, West and others formed the National Council, B.S.A. During that year the Scout Oath, Law and fundamental policies were established. Under his leadership over the next three decades, Scouting grew and matured into the program we recognize and enjoy today. Scouting today is the lengthened shadow of more than three decades of the farseeing and dedicated leadership of Dr. James E. West.

You can "extend your shadow" by contributing to the West Fellowship Award. Available for gifts of $1,000 and up to the Council's endowment fund, the gift must be in addition to, and not replace or diminish, the donor’s annual support.

For more information, please contact Michelle Strobel, Development Director, at (843) 425-2351.
