Dear Scouting Family,
I recently had a conversation with one of our past presidents of the Coastal Carolina
Council that reminded me just how transformative Scouting can be. He shared that
Scouting, in many ways, saved his life—by giving him direction, purpose, and the
foundational values that guided him toward success. That conversation brought home a
powerful truth: the Power of One.
What do I mean by that? It’s the idea that just one Scout—given the chance to fully
experience Scouting—can have their life forever changed. Through skill-building, merit
badges, leadership development, and the friendships forged along the way, one young
person can learn resilience, integrity, and self-reliance that stays with them for life.
Our history is filled with examples: Eagle Scouts who became U.S. Presidents,
astronauts, entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers, and countless community leaders. We can
only imagine how many lives—and entire communities—have been shaped by
just one Scout who took those lessons and made a difference.
As adult leaders and supporters—whether we’re currently active or alumni—we carry a
deep responsibility to keep Scouting thriving. That means living out the Scout Oath and
Law ourselves: helping others at all times, ensuring that today’s youth have the same
opportunities we had. Sometimes that’s financial support. Other times it’s volunteering,
mentoring, or advocating for Scouting in our communities and beyond.
Think about it: where would our country be without the values and skills that Scouting
has instilled in generations of young people? Many of us are that “one” Scout whose life
was transformed—and it’s why we feel compelled to give back in whatever way we can.
I know I am.
Let’s all stay vigilant and ready to extend a hand, to help guide the next generation—
One Scout at a Time.
Yours in Scouting,
