The Low Country Coin Club hosted a Coin Collecting merit badge class at their Summer Show in Ladson, SC on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at the Exchange Club of Charleston. Low Country Coin Club President Maurice Snook was overwhelmed by the number of Scouts who earned their coin collecting merit badge today.
With over thirty-five (35) Coastal Carolina Council scouts, leaders and family members in attendance, instructors Chris Staubes and Bob Brenner put on a lively Coin Collecting merit badge seminar. The event started with an explanation of the merit badge requirements and a history of coinage. Participants were encouraged to discuss the various aspects of the hobby, including the technical requirements for coinage and currency, and the historic and current processes for designing and minting coins. Many scouts brought their personal collections to the show and were able to display and explain their collections to the instructors. Those who needed to complete sets were directed to the Club’s Young Numismatist (YN) table, where club members provided scouts with coin albums and coins to assist with the requirements. Many families stayed hours beyond the actual class to make sure their scout(s) completed their sets.
Club member Zachary Ross hopes the class will introduce a new generation to the hobby. Low Country Coin Club Historian Emeritus Bob Brenner was ecstatic about the turnout, saying “the Low Country Coin Club has been around since 1960, and we are thrilled to be able to provide this valuable resource for our community.” Past President Randy Clark says the Club “looks forward to offering the class again at future shows.” At the end of the day, twenty-one (21) scouts earned the coin collecting merit badge.
The Low Country Coin Club meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 7:00pm at 2429 Midland park road, North Charleston.
